Benefits of Paper Craft Activities
Crafts like this 3D dog are not only fun, but they are also great for a child’s skill development.
The process of cutting out the pieces and folding them helps to build fine motor skills. Following the numbered steps also encourages patience and the ability to see a project through to completion.
Turning a flat sheet of paper into a three-dimensional model is a fantastic introduction to spatial reasoning. And, of course, they get a new toy they made themselves!
Supplies Needed:
Here are the basic supplies you’ll want for this project:
- Our Free Dog Craft PDF: The one-page printable template.
- Printer: Any standard home printer.
- White Cardstock Paper: (Recommended for a sturdier dog!)
- Scissors: For cutting out the three pieces.
- Glue: A glue stick or liquid craft glue will work great.
How to Assemble Your Dog
Building your paper dog is a simple and rewarding activity. The instructions are broken down into four easy steps.

Assembly Instructions:
- Cut Out Pieces: Carefully cut out the main dog body, the head, and the tail from the printed sheet.
- Fold the Body: Take the main body piece and fold it along all of the dotted lines to create the 3D shape.
- Glue the Body: Apply glue to each of the small gray flaps and press them into place to form the dog’s body.
- Add Head & Tail: Apply a little glue to the designated areas and attach the head to the front and the tail to the back of your assembled dog.
Tips for a Great Dog Craft
- Choose Cardstock: I highly recommend printing on white cardstock. It will make your dog much more durable and able to stand up well to playtime.
- Score Before You Fold: For sharp, clean folds, use a ruler and a blunt tool (like a butter knife or an empty pen) to score the dotted lines before folding.
- Be Patient with Glue: Allow the glue on the body to dry for a moment before you attach the head and tail. This helps everything stay in place.
