This “how to draw a rose” guide is perfect for kids who are just starting out with art, or for adults who want to add a cute cartoon-style flower to a handmade card or a journal page.

What You Need for Your Rose Drawing

Before we jump into the first step, let’s make sure you have everything you need. You don’t need any fancy art supplies for this. Most of these things are probably already sitting on your desk or in your craft drawer.

  • Paper: Any plain white paper will work. If you plan on using markers to color your rose later, you might want to use a slightly thicker paper so the ink doesn’t bleed through.
  • A Pencil or Marker: If you are worried about making mistakes, start with a pencil. This allows you to erase any lines that don’t look quite right.
  • Eraser: Essential if you are using a pencil.
  • Coloring Supplies: You can use crayons, colored pencils, or markers. Roses come in so many colors, so you can really have fun with this part.

How to Draw a Rose – Step-by-Step Instructions

We have broken this drawing down into six easy steps. Each step focuses on adding one specific part of the flower so you don’t get overwhelmed. Remember, every rose in nature is different, so it is perfectly okay if your lines aren’t exactly like ours!

Step 1: The Center Bud

Every rose starts from the middle. For the first step, we are going to draw the very center of the flower. Pick a spot on the upper half of your paper (leave plenty of room at the bottom for the stem and leaves).

Draw a simple oval shape. It can be a little bit tilted to the side to make it look more natural.

This oval represents the petals that are still tightly curled up in the center of the bloom. Don’t worry about making it a perfect circle; a slightly flattened or “squished” oval actually looks better for a flower.

Step 2: Building the Flower Head

Now we are going to add the first layer of petals around our center oval. Start at the left side of your oval and draw a curved line that sweeps down.

Do the same on the right side. These two lines should meet at a point at the bottom, creating a sort of “V” shape or a heart-like base for the flower.

Next, add a curved line on the left side that connects the outer edge to the center. This makes it look like the petals are overlapping. It’s starting to look like a flower already!

Step 3: The Spiral and Side Petals

To give the rose its classic look, we need to show the petals unfolding. Go back to that first oval you drew in Step 1.

Inside that oval, draw a small spiral or a curved “G” shape. This tiny detail is what makes the drawing instantly recognizable as a rose.

Once you have done the spiral, draw another curved line on the bottom left and right sides of the flower head, making another “V”. This adds more volume and makes the rose look full and healthy.

Step 4: The Large Outer Petals

As a rose blooms, the outer petals start to fall away from the center. To show this, we are going to add two large, wavy lines on the sides.

Draw a big, curved line on the left and another on the right. These should start near the top of your flower and curve down toward the bottom point.

Using wavy or slightly wiggly lines here is a great idea because real petals have soft, uneven edges.

Step 5: The Sepals and the Stem

Now that the flower head is finished, it needs a stem to hold it up! Before we draw the long stem, let’s add the “sepals.”

These are the tiny green leaves that sit right at the base of the flower. Draw two or three small, pointy triangle shapes right under the bottom point of your rose.

Next, draw the stem.

You can make the stem perfectly straight, or give it a little bit of a curve to make it look like it’s swaying in the wind.

Step 6: Adding Leaves

The final step is to add some leaves to your stem. Rose leaves usually have a bit of a teardrop shape with a pointy end. Draw one leaf on the left side of the stem and another on the right.

If you want to add even more detail, you can draw a thin line down the middle of each leaf to represent the vein. You could even add some tiny “thorns” by drawing very small, sharp triangles along the edges of the stem—but be careful not to poke your finger!

If you are using colored pencils, try pressing a little harder near the base of the petals and lighter toward the edges. This creates a simple shading effect that makes your rose look 3D!
