How To Draw a Tulip Step By Step Tutorial (Free PDF Inside!)

Letโ€™s draw a tulip today! This tutorial is designed to be very simple, making it a great project for kids or anyone who wants to sketch a quick spring flower. We have broken down the shape of the tulip into easy steps so you can get a great result in just a few minutes.

๐Ÿ“Œ How To Draw a Tulip

Tulips are wonderful because they have such a distinct, clean shape. Unlike other flowers with many tiny petals, the tulip is made of just a few large ones that curve together. This cartoon-style tulip is perfect for decorating notebooks, making Motherโ€™s Day cards, or just practicing your drawing skills.

As with our other guides, you can grab the directed drawing printable at the end to keep as a handy reference.

What You Need

To get started, you will only need a few basic supplies:

  • A piece of paper
  • A pencil or a black marker
  • Coloring toolsย (crayons, markers, or colored pencils)

Step-by-Step Tulip Drawing Instructions

Step 1: The First Petal

Start by drawing a slanted oval or a large seed shape in the center of your paper. This will be the main petal in the middle of your flower.

Make sure to leave enough room at the bottom of the page for the long stem and leaves later on.

Step 2: The Left Petal

Next, we are going to add a petal on the left side. Start near the top of your first shape and draw a curved line that sweeps out and then back down to meet the bottom of the center petal. This should look like a small wing or a curved bracket attached to the side.

Step 3: The Right Petal

Now, do the same thing on the right side. Draw a curved line starting from the top-right of your center petal and bring it down to the bottom.

This completes the main “cup” shape of the tulip head. Your flower should now look like three overlapping petals gathered at the base.

Step 4: The Back Petals

To make the tulip look 3D, we need to show the petals in the back. Draw three small, rounded “nubs” or peaks peeking out from the top of your main petals.

These represent the tips of the petals on the other side of the flower. Itโ€™s a small detail, but it really brings the flower to life!

Step 5: The Stem

Now it is time to give your flower some support. Starting from the bottom center of the petals, draw two long, parallel lines going down.

Drawing a double line instead of just a single line makes the stem look much more solid and gives you a space to color in with green later.

Step 6: The Long Leaves

Tulips are known for their tall, pointy leaves. To finish your drawing, draw two large, leaf shapes coming off the bottom of the stem.

These leaves should be quite long and come to a sharp point at the top, almost like a tall blade of grass.

Congratulations! You have successfully learned how to draw a tulip.

Time to Color

Now for the fun part! Tulips come in almost every color of the rainbow. You can color your flower a bright red, a sunny yellow, or a deep purple.

Tulip Colored

If you want to get really creative, you can even add stripes or a gradient effect where the color changes from the bottom to the top. Use a nice bright green for the stem and those tall leaves to finish it off.

Happy drawing!
