Kids can make one butterfly ring in just a few minutes, then try more in different colors.
Why Kids Will Love This Butterfly Ring Craft
This craft feels extra fun because it’s not just something kids make and keep on the table.
They can actually wear it on their finger like a little handmade ring.

The butterfly wings look pretty when you use two shades of the same color, like light pink and dark pink, or light purple and dark purple.
Kids can also make a bunch of these and use them for pretend play, party favors, dress-up, or handmade gifts.
Supplies You’ll Need
You only need a few simple supplies for this craft.

Supplies Needed:
Below are the supplies that you’ll need to have to get the best out of these gift tags!
- 2 long pipe cleaners any color
- 1 half black pipe cleaner
- Googly eyes
- Scissors
The two long pipe cleaners will be used for the butterfly wings and ring base.
The half black pipe cleaner will be used for the butterfly body and antennae.
You can use any colors you like, but two similar shades look really pretty for the wings.
For example, try light orange with dark orange, light blue with dark blue, or light purple with dark purple.
How To Make A Pipe Cleaner Butterfly Ring
Start by lining up the two long pipe cleaners so the ends match.
Find the middle and twist them together about 2 to 3 times.

This twisted part will help form the ring base that goes around the finger.
Next, place the twisted middle under your finger and bring both sides up around it.

Make sure both sides are about the same length so your butterfly wings turn out even.
Now twist the pipe cleaners together above your finger a couple of times.
You can take the ring off your finger before twisting if that feels easier.
If the ring becomes too tight, gently untwist it and adjust it until it fits comfortably.
After the ring shape is ready, spread the four pipe cleaner ends out evenly to form a X.

These four ends will become the butterfly wings.
Choose which two ends you want as the top wings and which two will be the bottom wings.
For the bottom wings, trim a small piece from both the ends so they are slightly shorter than the top wings.

This helps the butterfly shape look more balanced.
Now for the top wings, roll both the pipe cleaner ends inward into a tight spiral.
Keep rolling toward the center of the butterfly.

And for the bottom wings, roll both the pipe cleaner ends outward.
This helps the wings sit nicely together instead of spreading too far apart.

Now take the half black pipe cleaner and pass it through the ring loop behind the butterfly, right in the center where the body should be.

Wrap the lower part of this pipe cleaner up and around the middle of the butterfly.

Then twist it 2 or 3 times above the top wings to hold everything together.
The two ends at the top will become the butterfly antennae.
If one side is longer, trim the antennae so they look even.

To finish, curl the ends of the antennae into loose little spirals and add some googly eyes.

And that’s it. Your pipe cleaner butterfly ring is ready to wear.
When you flip your hand over, the back should just look like two twisted pipe cleaners around your finger.

Fun Ways To Decorate It
You can keep the butterfly ring simple or make it extra pretty.
Try adding tiny rhinestone stickers to the wings for a little sparkle.
Just place them evenly on both sides so the butterfly looks balanced.
You can also use sparkly pipe cleaners, pastel colors, rainbow colors, or bright summer shades.
Kids can make a whole set of butterfly rings in different colors and wear one on each finger.
Tips For Younger Kids
For younger kids, you may want to help with the first twist around the finger.
The wing spirals are easy once they get the idea, but the ring base may need a little adult help.
If the ring is too tight, don’t pull it hard.
Just untwist it slightly and make the loop bigger.
Use a cheap pair of craft scissors for cutting pipe cleaners so you don’t damage your good scissors.
Where To Use These Butterfly Rings
These butterfly rings are perfect for summer crafts, spring crafts, birthday parties, classroom activities, and pretend play.
Kids can wear them, gift them to friends, or make a small collection in different colors.
They would also be cute for party favors, fairy-themed crafts, garden-themed activities, or handmade jewelry projects.
